FDA EIR - Smithfield Grain - August 13, 2019
An FDA surveillance inspection of Smithfield Grain, located in Wilson, NC, took place on August 13, 2019. Conducted by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under contract with the FDA, the inspection evaluated the protein blender's adherence to regulatory standards for animal food, specifically 21 CFR §507 (Preventive Controls for Animal Food) and 21 CFR §589.2000 and 2001. The review encompassed raw material handling, manufacturing processes, product labeling, storage, and employee training. A significant observation documented on an FDA Form 483 highlighted a failure to ensure employees engaged in animal food operations were adequately trained in animal food hygiene and safety principles. Smithfield Grain management acknowledged this, stating they are in the process of transitioning to new corporate training programs that will provide all employees with the necessary education. Additional concerns discussed, though not formally listed on the Form 483, related to facility housekeeping. These included excessive dust, insect webbing on unused product, live insect activity in spilled material, and substantial accumulation of spilled ingredients. Management confirmed they are developing new housekeeping protocols and comprehensive employee training to rectify these conditions. The inspection resulted in the issuance of an FDA Form 483.
