FDA WARNING_LETTER - Pereira's Dairy Farm - January 15, 2014
On January 8, 13, and 15, 2014, the FDA inspected Pereira's Dairy Farm and found multiple violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. A bob veal calf sold for slaughter on June 3, 2013, was found to be adulterated, containing 64.87 ppm of sulfamethazine in liver tissue and 40.70 ppm in muscle tissue, significantly exceeding the 0.1 ppm tolerance for cattle and having no acceptable level for bob veal calves. This constitutes adulteration under section 402(a)(2)(C)(ii) of the FD&C Act.
The farm also held animals under insanitary conditions, failing to maintain treatment records, which could lead to medicated animals with harmful drug residues entering the food supply, violating section 402(a)(4). Furthermore, the farm engaged in extralabel drug use without veterinary supervision, causing drugs to be unsafe and adulterated under section 501(a)(5). Specifically, (b)(4) Antibacterial Sulfamethazine Sustained Release Calf Bolus was administered to a bob veal calf without following approved labeling, resulting in illegal residues. Sterile Penicillin G Procaine Injectable Suspension U.S.P. was used to treat uterine infections with excessive dosages and multiple injections at the same site, contrary to labeling.
