FDA WARNING_LETTER - Rise 'N Shine Farm, Inc - October 27, 2023
On October 25, 2024, the FDA issued a Warning Letter to Mr. Lawson, owner of a shell egg farm and processing facility in Calhoun, Georgia, following an inspection from October 23-27, 2023. The inspection revealed serious violations of the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in Shell Eggs regulation (21 CFR Part 118) and sanitation concerns.
Environmental samples collected by the FDA detected SE in manure and dust from the poultry house, and from a drain in the processing facility. Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) confirmed two strains of *Salmonella enterica*, both matching clinical isolates and demonstrating capability to cause human illness. Subsequent egg testing by the firm also yielded a positive SE result.
Key violations include: 1. Failure to implement a written SE prevention plan specific to the farm, as required by 21 CFR 118.4. 2. Failure to conduct environmental testing of the pullet environment at 14-16 weeks of age (21 CFR 118.4(a)(2)(i)). 3. Failure to conduct environmental testing for SE in the poultry house when laying hens were 40-45 weeks of age (21 CFR 118.5(a)). 4.
